What You Need To Know:

BOOGEYMAN is a horror movie starring Barry Watson of 7TH HEAVEN as Tim, a young man haunted by stories and nightmares of “the Boogeyman.” Child psychologists have convinced Tim that his belief that the Boogeyman took his missing father is not true. The problem is, Tim was there when it happened. Tim is afraid to go back to his hometown to face his fears. When his mother suddenly dies, Tim decides to spend the night at the house where he thought he saw the Boogeyman take his dad. The Boogeyman turns out to be a real demonic force. The demon threatens the ones he loves, so Tim decides to take action.

BOOGEYMAN the movie is filled with scary scenes and scary supernatural encounters with the demonic title character. The movie contains some positive, but brief, redemptive elements as the hero battles the demon, but these are not strong enough to overcome the movie’s mixed pagan worldview, which includes occult elements and false, confusing and unclear theology. Unlike many other contemporary horror movies, the hero does apparently banish the demon from his life, but this is not clearly stated in a Christian or biblical context.

Content:

(PaPa, C, B, O, FR, L, VV, S, N, A, M) Mixed pagan worldview with redemptive moral elements and premise (including minister quotes New Testament at funeral service and positive metaphorical references to light defeating demonic forces of darkness), occult content (including protagonist talks to ghosts of demon’s victims, telling one little girl’s ghost, “I want to help you” but ghost says, “You can’t. You can only help yourself”), and false, confused, unclear theology; four mostly light obscenities and one light profanity; many scary scenes and violent scenes such as demon throws people and objects around, demon tries to drown woman in bath, man hits his head which bleeds, people enter dark closets that serve as demon’s portal, people force themselves to face demon and become scared to the point of screaming, woman falls off horse and bangs her head, protagonist has nightmarish visions and dreams of demonic monster and dead people, demon tries to pull people into closets and sometimes succeeds, girl’s ghost has pictures of missing children apparently taken by demonic monster or actual demon, and crow flies into man’s windshield, nearly causing a head-on collision; implied sex and unmarried couple plan to fornicate; implied nude woman and upper male nudity; alcohol use; no smoking; and, miscellaneous problems such as unmarried couple sneaks around in her parents’ house.

In effect, the movie says that evil and darkness can be removed by goodness and light. This is a true statement as far as it goes, but it is also true that only Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World, can really overcome evil.
