The pre-school to 5th grade children of Our Lady of Sorrows, West Wyoming, enjoyed a Halloween party with parade, prizes, food and drinks. A treat bag was presented to each child, a raffle was also held.

The students of SS. Peter and Paul School in Plains competed in the Diocese of Scranton Forensic League fall competition which was held at Holy Rosary School. Each student presented a dramatic reading of a prose selection. St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Rock and Center Street, Hughestown will hold their poppy seed and nut roll sale once again. Donation is $7.50. Orders must be in by December 14. Pick up date will be December 20 from 12 to 3 p.m. Call 654-1849 or 654-1594 for orders.
Caroling Party
A Community Caroling Party will be held at Langcliffe Presbyterian Church, 1001 Main St., Avoca, on Friday evening, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Please meet in the church basem*nt. There is no age limit but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Dress warmly and bring a flashlight. If you are unable to walk and sing in the cold, enjoy a sing-along in the church basem*nt.
Hot chocolate will be served at the church following caroling.
Crystal Band Concert
The famous Crystal Band will present a concert of Christmas music on Friday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at Langcliffe Presbyterian Church, 1001 Main St., Avoca. A free offering will be accepted at the door. All are welcome. Proceeds go to the Crystal Band to continue their musical concerts. An optional offering can be a nonperishable food item to support the local food pantry.

Free concert
The Wyoming Avenue Christian Church Concert Choir, 881 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston will be presenting their 17th annual Christmas Night of Music titled How Do You Welcome A King on Sunday evening December 14 at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
They are very pleased to have returning to sing for us again this year, Linda McIntyre and Aprile Jordan as our guest soloists. As a new feature, they have Linda Pineho and Cindy Thomas as guest flutists.
Following the concert there will be a time of fellowship with homemade holiday refreshments in the F.L. John Room. A very warm welcome to all. The church is handicapped accessible and is equipped with an inside elevator. The concert is free so bring family and friends.
Christmas Play
A New Christmas play, The Shepherd Girl and the Manger, Living Nativity 2008 directed by the Reverend Gerald J. Gurka will be presented at St. John the Baptist Church, 126 Nesbitt Street, Larksville, at 4 p.m. with Christmas Eve Vigil Mass immediately following.
The play, an imaginary back-story, portrays Renaissance Medieval legends concerning animals and plants,that surround the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, as seen through the eyes of a young shepherd girl.
Meet new legendary characters whose lives intersect with the events of the First Christmas Night, all made possible by a cast and crew of over 50 volunteers, aged pre-school through senior citizen.
Holiday Fair

Religious Education Classes for students in grades 1 through 6 meet on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Religious Education Center. All children, grades 1 through 6, registered in public or private school should be attending Religious Education classes.
In order to enter more deeply into this Year of St. Paul, Father Tom is leading a Scripture Study of St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. Anyone who volunteered to bake cookies for the Christmas Carolers is asked to drop their cookie donations off in the church hall following all masses today. And 2009 church calendars will be available in the church hall following all masses. “Put Christ in Christmas” manger scene magnets are also available at a cost of $3.00.

The social concerns committee of St. Mary’s Church has assembled the parish’s annual giving tree. The gift request tags that are on the tree list some special gifts for some special people in our community who are in need of assistance this holiday season. For just $10 per ticket, you will have a chance to win $75 daily and $100 on Fridays throughout January. You will also have a chance to win $250 on New Year’s Day, $250 on January 19, and $1,000 on January 31. The winning number is based on the evening daily number of the Pennsylvania Lottery. St. Mary’s Church will have Masses for the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics, Monday, Dec. 8 at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. A vigil Mass will be celebrated Sunday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.
St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society will have their Christmas party Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jade Room, Taylor.
Please note there will not be an 8 a.m. Mass Thursday, Dec. 11 at St. Mary’s Church.

The children of St. Mary’s Church will perform their Christmas program Sunday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
The King’s Kids children’s group will have a Christmas Extravaganza in St. Mary’s School, Spring Street. Children of all ages from St. Mary’s, SS. Peter and Paul’s, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Churches are invited to come and enjoy games, food, crafts, a wonderful story, and a visit with Santa himself! Al-Anon, a support group offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics, meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the basem*nt meeting room of St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St., and Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the basem*nt meeting room of the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., Duryea. Anyone who has been impacted by someone else’s drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon fellowship.
