Is there a 10X ETF?
The
Longtime ETF analyst Todd Sohn of Strategas Securities said the Leverage Shares 5x Long Magnificent Seven ETP UK:MAG7 appears to be the most heavily levered product available to trade in any developed market, although a seven-times levered index on oil and gas futures exists in Europe.
These funds can offer high returns, but they also come with high risk and expenses. Funds that offer 3x leverage are particularly risky because they require higher leverage to achieve their returns.
Symbol | Name | 5-Year Return |
---|---|---|
XNTK | SPDR NYSE Technology ETF | 18.58% |
UPRO | ProShares UltraPro S&P500 | 18.52% |
PTF | Invesco Dorsey Wright Technology Momentum ETF | 18.33% |
QQQ | Invesco QQQ Trust Series I | 18.27% |
Experts agree that for most personal investors, a portfolio comprising 5 to 10 ETFs is perfect in terms of diversification. But the number of ETFs is not what you should be looking at.
BMO has launched the first quadruple leveraged ETN fund that tracks the S&P 500. The fund will trade under the ticker symbol "XXXX" and seeks to generate four time the S&P 500's return on a daily basis. The launch come as bullishness rise among investors and Wall Street predicts more gains to come in 2024.
The Leverage Shares 5x Long US Tech 100 ETP Securities is designed to provide 5x the daily return of Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) stock, adjusted to reflect the fees and costs of maintaining a leveraged position in the stock.
"They all go to 0 over time." "If you hold them for more than a few days, you will lose money." The 3x Long Nasdaq 100 ETF (TQQQ) was launched in February 2010, over 8 years ago. Since its inception, it has advanced 4,357%, versus a gain of 378% for the unleveraged Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQ).
Leveraged ETFs decay due to the compounding effect of daily returns, volatility of the market and the cost of leverage. The volatility drag of leveraged ETFs means that losses in the ETF can be magnified over time and they are not suitable for long-term investments.
Nearly all leveraged ETFs come with a prominent warning in their prospectus: they are not designed for long-term holding. The combination of leverage, market volatility, and an unfavorable sequence of returns can lead to disastrous outcomes.
What ETF beat the S&P 500 over 10 years?
That makes outperforming the S&P 500 on a consistent basis no small task. The one fund that has beaten the index in nine of the past 10 years is the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEMKT: XLK).
Symbol | Name | Dividend Yield |
---|---|---|
XRMI | Global X S&P 500 Risk Managed Income ETF | 12.39% |
YYY | Amplify High Income ETF | 12.27% |
TUGN | STF Tactical Growth & Income ETF | 12.15% |
SPYI | NEOS S&P 500 High Income ETF | 12.15% |
The largest Aggressive ETF is the iShares Core Aggressive Allocation ETF AOA with $1.82B in assets. In the last trailing year, the best-performing Aggressive ETF was EAOA at 14.70%. The most recent ETF launched in the Aggressive space was the iShares ESG Aware Aggressive Allocation ETF EAOA on 06/12/20.
SPY, VOO and IVV are among the most popular S&P 500 ETFs. These three S&P 500 ETFs are quite similar, but may sometimes diverge in terms of costs or daily returns. Investors generally only need one S&P 500 ETF.
Holding an ETF for longer than a year may get you a more favorable capital gains tax rate when you sell your investment.
The Bottom Line
Over time, there will be ups and downs in the markets and in individual stocks, but a low-cost portfolio made up entirely of ETFs could ease volatility and help you achieve your investment goals.
And while theoretically possible, the entire US stock market going to zero would be incredibly unlikely. It would, in fact, take a catastrophic event involving the total dissolution of the US government and economic system for this to occur.
Because they rebalance daily, leveraged ETFs usually never lose all of their value. They can, however, fall toward zero over time. If a leveraged ETF approaches zero, its manager typically liquidates its assets and pays out all remaining holders in cash.
ProShares UltraPro QQQ is the most popular and liquid ETF in the leveraged space, with AUM of $21.9 billion and an average daily volume of 67.3 million shares a day. The fund seeks to deliver three times the return of the daily performance of the NASDAQ-100 Index, charging investors 0.88% in annual fees.

- Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF (MGK)
- iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM)
Does fidelity have a QQQ equivalent?
QQQ is managed by Invesco, while ONEQ is managed by Fidelity. Both QQQ and ONEQ are considered high-volume assets.
And the QQQ is cheap, only charging 0.2%. There's an even cheaper version, the Invesco Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQM), which charges just 0.15%. Compare that to the 0.75% charged by ARK Innovation (ARKK). And ARK Innovation gained just 2.6% annually in the past 10 years.
7 While the Nasdaq-100 is historically more volatile than the S&P 500, QQQ can be held over long time frames while its cousin, TQQQ is definitely a short-term trade.
Historical data shows that leveraged ETFs can experience significant losses during market downturns, and negative returns can accumulate over time. Indicators suggest that a bubble may be forming in the Nasdaq-100 and that a recession could be on the horizon, making investing in TQQQ too risky.
While the Fund has a daily investment objective, you may hold Fund shares for longer than one day if you believe it is consistent with your goals and risk tolerance. For any holding period other than a day, your return may be higher or lower than the Daily Target. These differences may be significant.
